Surrey Law Society has submitted its response to the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s consultation on its proposed Business Plan and Funding Requirements for 2026/27, following consultation with members from across the Surrey legal community.
.
The Society’s response reflects feedback from a broad cross-section of firms and practitioners, including sole practitioners, small, medium and large firms, and those practising across a wide range of legal disciplines. While members broadly supported the SRA’s strategic objectives and recognised that appropriate investment may be necessary to improve regulatory performance, there was significant concern regarding the scale of the proposed funding increases and the need for greater transparency, accountability and demonstrable value for money.
.
The response also highlights concerns about the potential impact of the proposals on sole practitioners, smaller firms and legal aid providers, and encourages the SRA to ensure that future funding arrangements more fairly reflect the differing size, structure and risk profile of regulated firms.
.
As part of the consultation process, Surrey Law Society also joined with fellow County Societies Group members in supporting a separate joint response highlighting the common themes emerging from a number of local law society submissions.
.
We would like to thank all members who took the time to complete our survey and review the draft response. Your feedback played a vital role in ensuring that the views of the Surrey legal profession were clearly represented.
